Update 7/9/15  Are you the leader of the pack?    Do your friends tell you to slow down on your walks?   Do you wish they’d go just one more mile before heading home?   Do you find yourself alone at the finish line?  Are you always on the run - hitting the pavement – wearing out your tennis shoes?  If your usual exercise buddies have stopped answering the door or “accidently” miss your calls it may be time to up your game.  Add a dash of Magic to the old routine and YOU may become the one who can’t keep up.

I’m not talking about having an energy drink or a 15th cup of coffee.  What you need is pure Magic ― not the walking stick and hooded robe kind ― the leash and fur coat kind.   Simply attach one end of the leash to your arm and the other to your Magic collar and you’re outta there!

You already know the right workout buddy can turn “let’s call it quits” into “let’s keep going.”  With energy to spare this youngster will keep pace with your beach cruiser on the street and trot along the longest trail you can find.  At home he’s always ready for a game of tag or keep-away and would adore a 4 legged brother or sister (or 2) to wrestle with.

When he’s not moving Magic is a very affectionate boy who loves to cuddle and, at the end of the day, he’ll welcome the chance to snuggle with you on the couch and be quite happy to sleep in your bed – if you don’t mind the company.  He’s super smart and VERY food driven which gives him a huge advantage in learning the ropes and what you’re asking him to do. An overgrown puppy without a mean bone in his big body, this sweet, loveable goof has some maturing to do and some manners to perfect but his potential is limitless.

Update: 2/19/2015  Magic is mange free!  Next week he will be neutered and a procedure will be performed on his eye to repair the entropion.

Now that Magic is healthy and feeling good, probably for the first time in a long time, he is turning out to be a high energy pup that can be vocal when he is not being entertained.  Magic would love a family that is very active and enjoys daily long runs, or has space where he can run and play.  Ideally, Magic would thrive with a canine pal that can keep up.

Magic is extremely lovable, affectionate and will cuddle.  While Magic is great in his kennel, he needs an outlet for his energy.

1/10/2015  We received Magic from the shelter on 1/7/15 and he was brought to them as a stray. We are unsure how long he was stray, or if that’s even the case but it was very clear that this guy was in bad shape. This kind of malnourishment doesn’t happen in a few months and it takes a long time of neglect. He stands as tall as our English Mastiff and only weighed in at 50 pounds. Every single bone is his body was visible and you could actually wrap your hands around his spine and hip bones. He was starving to death. We are estimating he should be around 75-80 pounds.

To add to his misery this poor guy is covered in mange (not contagious) and has an eye infection. He is currently on antibiotic, liquid oral medication for his mange, medicated eye drops and medicated baths. He is required to have his follow up visit in one month (Feb 7th) and he will continue to stay on this regiment of treatments until he receives two negative skin scrapes in a row with no mange detected. This will require time and dedication to get him back to his beautiful self. He is missing hair all over his body and face. But, he’s still one handsome man!

Even though he is around 2/3 years old he is still very much a “puppy” and needs to learn some manners. And just like all puppies, he is very stubborn and loves to play. It will take someone who is experienced in handling large dogs to adopt him. He tests my older dog’s patience quite often because he is very vocal and tries to play with everyone even if they don’t want to play. We also have two cats and he does great with them!

He is VERY food driven and he still acts as if each meal is his last. He is able to put his head on our kitchen counter tops and has been getting corrected a lot on taking things down from them. Anything that may have food on it he thinks he should try, to include dishes in the sink! We feed all of our dogs at the same time and he has to be watched or crated when feeding or he will attempt to eat everyone’s food. If food is available he will eat it but he shows no food aggression or protection. He can be mouthy when taking treats so we have been training him to not take anything from us until he sits and we say “ok” and he has been doing great with that! He is crate trained and goes in them on his own when we leave the house because he gets rewarded with a milk bone. He is also house trained and will scratch at the door when he needs to go outside.

We do not have kids so I cannot answer how he would be around children. I do not see aggression being an issue at all but I would prefer if he goes to a home with kids that are older and able to handle his size and energy level. Because he is a large dog and still has a lot of energy I think he would be too much for toddlers to be around since he does not realize his size.

Overall he is a big, sweet lover and will lay with you on the couch and sleep with you in the bed if you let him. He is very affectionate and loves to cuddle. He does well in car rides and will play with just about any toy. He’s very trainable but it will take patience and we are working with him every day. He doesn’t have one mean bone in his body but he doesn’t realize how big he is and all of that love can be a bit much if he should jump or be playing.

We are looking forward to his progress and can’t wait until this big, handsome boy gets his beautiful new coat in. He shows his appreciation and love in his deep, brown eyes and just deserves to be spoiled for the rest of his life. I call him my “Baloo Bear” from the Jungle Book because he’s just a big bear of love lol!

*Potential adopters must understand that he has medical issues and they must be willing to take those on!* He is a large dog and he will need a big back yard or daily walks and exercise. Preferably he should be in a house and not an apartment. If you are going to continue to crate train him then he must be in an adequate size crate.
