Percy is a young, active, affectionate and extremely striking, mostly black with some tan, 8.5 month old male GSD. I get stopped on the street constantly, especially since he is black and tan and is a contrast to my GSD who is tan and black!
He is going through the puppy stage: mouthy, trying to be the alpha, testing boundaries, but very endearing and never destructive! Because of his mouthiness and disregard for personal space at this age, I recommended a home with kids over 10, because he will knock little ones over. He also is not crazy about commotion, especially shrieking, that makes him chase and jump.He needs a strong leader who is dedicated to training. He does take a little while to warm up to strangers (we have timed it to six minutes), and he will hide behind his foster mom and GSD foster sister until he is comfortable. The more he is out on the town, the more the timid tendencies recede. He taking VERY quickly to learning leash manners and should stick to a pinch prong collar as he is going to be in the 85-90lb range when fully grown. He responds best to positive correction. He is willful, but not aggressive. He just needs to learn (and is) that when he is not getting his way, he needs to keep his mouth to himself. With consistent training, this dog will be even more amazing! People who have met him have been surprised that he is as mature as he is for his size and age.
Percy is crate trained, but due to his history of spending upwards of 20 hours in a crate, he should not spend more than 4 hours during the day in it. He has some minor wearing on his teeth where he attempted to chew out of his crate- luckily, he was surrendered before it could get very noticeable or become an issue. He will sleep in the crate, but the added time in there during the day causes anxiety. So does not being fed on time. Who could blame him? He did not get attention on a regular basis, was alone a lot in a basement, has already been in 2 homes where he has been locked in a crate, and he never knew when he going to be fed! Now that his life is structured and he only sleeps in the crate, he will hop in there to chew on an antler and hide his foster sister’s toys to drive her insane. He REALLY likes to do that! He also is becoming calmer at dinner and breakfast time. He would LOVE to sleep in bed with his adopter as he wants to snuggle and be with someone all the time. Percy is not interested in human possessions unless they are made of rawhide, stuffed, or otherwise edible- he is trustworthy around belongings. Just have toys at the ready to throw and he will be set. He will wear your arm out! ..kids who have stuffed animals or dolls had best beware though, as he would consider that as a Percy- Possession! You can take toys out of his mouth without a care. He also, if I may be allowed to brag, has learned "release". He also will drop things in your hand! He has had some opportunities to bark but has remained quiet. Any barking he has been appropriate. He is not a talker or whiner...but he will give a good sigh! He does make noises in his sleep, which I find very cute. He pretty much ignores other dogs when we are walking. Curious, yes, but has not barked or lunged. Percy does not mark, countersurf, scoot, and is not much of a jumper (unless you are shrieking and running). He DOES want to chase cars, so the adopter has to be very aware of that inclination and curb it.
If you are walking around your neighborhood, Percy will quietly lay down as you chat. He also will sleep on your feet if you are sitting! What a cutie! He did that naturally and without any direction! If Percy could talk, he would tell you he wants to be the center of someone’s world. If you think you are a match for Percy and can commit to both making him the center of your world and meet the criteria in his bio
