Hello, my name is Adam. I have lived quite the storybook life in my 2 years. You see my sweet mom and I were kept tied to a tree in the backyard of our owner’s yard, exposed to the weather and those pesky insects. We were both well underweight and then — out of nowhere came a nice man in a uniform and untied mom and me and took us off to start a new phase of our lives. We were taken to the SPCA where lots of nice people started cleaning us up and helping rid us of those pesky insects. They said I had Lyme disease and they started me on a treatment right away (I am fine now). I was still skeptical of these big people, as I was never shown the attention or love I was now receiving.
We were ready for our next step – what they call a "temp" test. My mom passed her test and off she went with a lady from a rescue group. Then it was my turn. In came a man heading right toward my kennel. I didn’t know what to expect but he was kind and gentle and told the shelter that he was going to take me into the VGSR foster program.
He felt sorry for me and with Thanksgiving approaching he wanted to show me a better life. We went to his house where I met Linda, a retired bomb detection Malinois, and Remy a VGSR alum. Since I had to work on overcoming my fear of people, I went to work everyday. My newfound friend had to go out of the country for two months, so I moved in with mom. Linda joined me and we moved in with Callie, a 9 year old German Shepherd.
Although I spent the first 2 weeks in my new home hiding in my crate and trying to avoid people I knew that the crate door was open and I could come and go when I wanted to. It didn’t take me long to venture out into a new world for me. Since I vacated my crate, my new found sisters and I spend our time romping in the big backyard or lounging around the family room in front of the nice warm fireplace, keeping my foster mom company.
I am great with other dogs, and I love children (they love me too – they say I am cuddly). I am a real lovebug now because I have learned what it is like to be loved and treated like a family member. I have put the bad memories of the first 2 years of my life behind me and I am loving my new found lifestyle. Since I love attention and have learned to give back that love I would be perfect in a home with children or in a home of an older couple (you see I am small and easy to handle). My foster mom says I would make a perfect therapy dog, as people tend to gravitate to my sweet loving face.
My leash skills need a little work, but in time I will master it. I just need assurance that it is a human at the other end of the leash and not a tree. I should be fully recovered from my neutering after mid-January and will be ready to show off at adoption events.
