6-26-23 Felix update: His mouthiness has greatly subsided, and only briefly surfaces when he gets very excited during play, but takes correction very well. The novelty/fascination with cats is over and he is only mildly interested in them as shown in the video. He does very well on leash around people and other dogs.
He now recognizes his name and recalls well, he has picked up 10 lbs and still needs to gain another 4-5 ( ideal weight 70-74). He absolutely loves playing in water ( see video) and will make a mess while drinking water from a bowl in the house. Plays well with our 2.5 yr old female shepherd. We are continuing to work on sit, down, and stay commands. We have him out of his crate when we are home to supervise, as he still tends to pick up clothing/towels/ dog beds when left on his own.
He seeks attention from his person for body rubs and once calmed will lay at your feet. He is cautious around new people he meets, but not growly or barky.
6-19-23. Meet Felix, he was turned into a shelter by a family that was going through a divorce. It was quickly apparent that poor Felix had not had much exposure to any sort of training or to the outside or inside world in general, he was exceptionally mouthy when being handled, had absolutely no manners, did not appear to know his name and is underweight by about 10 lbs. He had some wounds on his neck from a chain/collar so probably has lived outside chained up.
In the 1.5 weeks we have had him, we have worked on mouthiness, name recognition, recall, crate training, leash walking without grabbing the leash, and settling in the house without being crated. He is picking it up quickly, but given where he started he still has a ways to go.
He is good with other dogs, but lacks understanding on how to properly meet his new friends….he immediately goes into full play/ leap mode. He does the same with our cats, so can not be trusted with them at this time. We learned he now loves water…wave chasing, pool and water hose play.
He seeks attention and loves his body rub downs once he settles. He likes playing with the jolly ball and other toys.
At this time, he would only be adopted to persons very experienced in training a 1.5 year old “puppy”.
For all others I will continue to update his progress on becoming a well rounded family dog.
