We have a HERO who needs a home! Rexo 6311 is a very special dog with a very special talent. He is an explosive/firearms detection dog who has spent his entire life protecting others. His story began overseas where he was trained and worked in Jordan for a federal contractor sniffing out explosives. He had some limb lameness after intense work days and after extensive testing was deemed suitable to work but it was decided he needed a less strenuous job so he was donated to a police department where he worked for 3 years ensuring the community's safety at sporting events and such. He came into VGSR care in September 2022. Rexo was 6 years old at that time and still had the drive to work so VGSR donated him to a small Virginia police department who was starting a K9 program. After 10 months of serving his community Rexo is back in our care as the police department decided to cut funding for the K9 program. Rexo turned 7 years old in May but he is still a high energy dog that needs mental and physical stimulation. When
we first met Rexo it was love at first sight. He is nothing short of amazing. Rexo enjoys being inside with his people, he loves chasing balls or shaking his stuffy toys...if given the choice he would carry around his Kong all day long. He’s friendly with all people and hasn't met a stranger. Rexo has done great with older children but hasn't been exposed to young children other than in public events. Rexo will only be adopted to a home with no other dogs. We would like
him to go to a home that has a fenced yard, preferably 6ft but negotiable for an experienced adopter.
He is current on vaccines and was recently neutered. Rexo is a hero in every sense of the word. He is courageous, drive and has served others his entire life. It is now HIS time to retire in the forever home he so deserves.
8/5/23: Rexo went for a 2.5 mile walk today with another male GSD. He did great after a few initial barks. He was interested in other dogs passing and a few that charged the fence line of their yards but he was not reactive towards any of them. He needs improvement on his leash manners as he pulls hard and enjoys sniffing everything he encounters. Rexo is a bit of a bull in a china shop. He doesn't realize how large he is and gets very excited at times. He can easily knock things over including children. He knows commands in English and German but seems to listen better in German. Rexo is not a huge fan of the crate but will eventually settle. He prefers to be where his people are. He loves car rides and gets overly excited when it's time to get out. He has a sweet spot on his side and enjoys getting some good scratches. Rexo is not overly affectionate but seeks attention on his own terms. He is a comedian at times and will roll his head all over you while you sit on the couch! We think this is his way of showing affection! He enjoys food and treats and will work for them! Approved adopters may email his foster parents at gsd2020k9@gmail.com
