11/15/15 Update - Princess has made significant improvements since we first brought her home. She is no longer reactive to strangers. She attended an adoption event last week where she happily greeted everyone who came up to her, adults and children. She also spent about a week and a half with another foster who has several dogs. She did very well with them all. She had one small spat with another foster dog but it was quickly resolved and they ran across the field together after. If Princess were to go to a home with another dog, I think it would be best that the other dog be comparable in size to her rather than a smaller dog. She still needs a confident handler who has GSD experience and can continue to work with her on obedience and who will maintain a stable, consistent environment as she will regularly test her boundaries. She is a great dog and is very intellegent, she will learn anything that you can teach her. She loves to run and spend time outside, so I can see her doing well with fly ball or frisbee. I would love to see Princess go to a very active home as she has a lot of energy to burn.
Meet Princess!
Princess is a purebred AKC registered German Shepherd. She is a sweet, beautiful, young girl who will work best with a confident and experienced leader, who will not be afraid of her when she tests their leadership but will be patient with her as she learns. Princess is not for the first time German Shepherd owner. While Princess is willing to please and is motivated by food and praise, she is reactive to strangers and other dogs and needs someone who is will be able to work with and correct this behavior. We are continuing to work with Princess on this as long as she is with us as well. She is a quick learner but needs to have the proper behaviors reinforced. Her ideal adopter would be someone who is home often to keep her engaged and learning new things, or in a training oriented household. Princess loves to play frisbee, so it would be best to have a large fenced yard for her to run in but also be with someone who would like to take her hiking or jogging.
We have not cat tested her with a cat in the house but were told she will chase them. There is a stray cat in our neighborhood that she has seen and was very interested in. She does have a high prey drive, and at this time we would not recommend a home with cats or small dogs.
Princess is house and crate trained. During the day when we are home she is allowed free roam of the house. She has not demonstrated any destructive behaviors. Every now and then she will pick up a shoe or a sock but she is more interested in playing keep away with it and we have not seen her chew on anything other than her toys.
Princess rides well in the car and allows handling all over. Princess has not demonstrated any food, resource, or toy guarding issues. She does love a good game of tug of war so we are working on "drop it" with her and she is doing well.
Approved adopters can contact her foster mom directly at crystalpsorrenti@gmail.com
