Hi there, I am Mavrick (AKA Bourbon). My entire family/pack was turned into a rural shelter (we were apparently living at a warehouse until someone decided to take us to the shelter). My foster mom has called me resilient, happy-go-lucky, and easy-going. Maybe that’s because I have responded so well to all of the situations that I’ve been in recently. I only spent one night at my new foster home, then I visited this place called the "vet" where they did more poking and prodding. The nice vet lady also told my foster mom that I was not the puppy she thought I was. I am actually all grown up and about 1 1/2 years old. So, while at the vet, they also did something called "neutering" (so I feel a bit different now). When foster mom picked me up at the vet’s office the next day, all of my new friends told her how wonderful I am. The entire staff came to say goodbye, and I had a nice long visit with all of them before going home. Even though I have an incision and have to wear the "cone of shame", I am still happy and friendly and hardly even act like any of these life-changing events have occurred. Mom says I now have to learn "potty training" and "basic obedience" ...then I’ll be the perfect dog. You can also meet me at adoption events in Annandale, Springfield, and maybe even Gainesville. I’ll be sure to give you my signature smile and curled tail wag!
August 13, 2012 Update:
Bourbon continues to grow and thrive. Each day, I am amazed by his resilience. He is now fully recovered from his neuter surgery and his bout with Giardia and is fit as a fiddle. He is adjusting to life without his sister Beignet (who moved to a different foster home). Now that he doesn’t need to protect her, his true personality is emerging. He’s very attentive to me, and will make someone a wonderful companion. He has learned "sit" and "down". We are working on "come", "stay", and "leave it/off". We are also working on leash manners, and he has improved greatly now that he’s walking with my dogs, who are showing him the ropes. Little Bourbon is very playful. He loves to run around the yard and chase the tennis ball. He is learning to retrieve it and bring it back to me. He also loves chew toys.
With the right person, I think he’d make a great Frisbee dog -- he’s fast, can jump, and is motivated to chase and retrieve. Unfortunately, I stink at throwing a frisbee.
Bourbon is shy at first when meeting new people but warms up quickly. He loves belly rubs and always rolls over for them.
He is also selective about his canine friends. He seems to be more comfortable with smaller dogs. At first he and my personal dogs had some differences that they have now worked out. Bourbon pretty much ignores my female GSD but is obsessed with my male lab mix. Bourbon keeps trying to get the lab to play, but has thus far been unsuccessful.
Bourbon has a big personality in a small package. His personality is very shepherd-like, however, we suspect that he is mostly Shiba Inu (due to his size, his dense coat, facial markings, and curly tail). Whatever his lineage, he is part of the VGSR family now! Do you have a place in your heart and home for him?
