![]() Alfie |
Hi! My name is Alfie. Im a 4-month-old, male, GSD mix. Some really great people found me on the side of the road with my
brother and sister. Why would anyone think we could go dumpster diving, as little as we are, but the nice people at the VGSR are
giving us everything we could ever need, but right now, we need a forever home. I'm up-to-date on all my vaccines, and on
September 12, my foster mommy says I'm supposed to be neutered, whats that?? Oh, well. Anyhow, I'm kind of a shy-boy, but
I'm so very sweet, and can't wait to go to my forever home. If you’d like more info on me. please email my foster mommy at
robin3delano@yahoo.com. DRVA

![]() Bella #7 |
Bella was picked up as a stray, so nothing is known about her past. Bella is an incredibly sweet and affectionate dog, but in
need of some manners. She is making progress with commands such as sit and down and each day walks better on a leash. She
is still learning not to jump up when she’s excited. Bella loves to play with her foster sister, play fetch and chew on bones. Bella
loves her crate and retreats to it quite often throughout the day. If you’re looking for a loveable companion, Bella is your girl!

![]() Boomer #2 |
Boomer is a sweet older dog. He is good with all dogs and cats. Boomer loves attention from his humans and will snuggle
up for cuddles. Boomer is house-trained and crate-trained. Boomer unfortunately does have a persistent skin and ear allergy
which will likely require monthly treatments. If you would like to learn more about sweet Boomer please contact Susan at
run4stacatto@yahoo.com. LSMD

![]() Buddy #8 |
Buddy is about 5 years old, mostly house-trained, and good with other dogs and children. He seems indifferent to cats. He
is underweight at about 60 lbs., and still intact while he undergoes heartworm treatment. He wants to be a good companion but
is still learning what life in a house is all about. He countersurfs and will investigate the trash if he smells something interesting
in it. He is affectionate, ungainly, and doesn't know any commands. Whoever takes the time to train and love him will be
rewarded with complete and total devotion. LRMD

![]() Carmen #2 |
Carmen MUST be placed with another dog. She is very, very SHY and prefers dogs over people. After a week in foster care
she still runs for cover if I approach her. Outside she will just lie down and roll over to be picked up. She is very sweet. To see
her play with the other dogs is wonderful. With hope, she will come around soon as she sees the others do. She will walk on a
leash but only after a few minutes to laying down and then will only go where she wants to. She will need to be placed with
someone who has lots of patience. LTVA

![]() Charlotte |
Charlotte is long-haired, female German Shepherd. She was turned in to Animal Control for being a puppy and was too
much for her owners. She is a very sweet girl with a gorgeous coat that will require a lot of brushing. She had many mats
throughout her coat and it was obvious she was not properly groomed in her prior home. She gets along with all of her foster
brothers and sisters. She loves toys and quickly discovered the toy box. She has managed to play with every single dog toy in
the house. She also has adapted to the comforts of home enjoys lounging on the couch and is a snuggle bug. She is looking for
an active home that will give her the proper exercise a young GSD needs. She will also need lots of love, snuggle time and a
playmate wound be wonderful. Continued socialization with other dogs and people will guarantee she stays the well-rounded
girl she already is so this is a must with her forever home. DDVA

![]() Coty |
My name is Coty. I'm a shepherd mix, and like my my brother Alfie, we were found dumpster diving..humans these days!!
I'm up-to-date on my shots, and my foster mommy says I need this surgery, on the 12th of September, for neutering, and I’ll be
good to go to my forever home. My foster mommy says Im very outgoing, and very brave. I love attention as well as kisses. And
I'm doing very well learning to walk nicely on the leash, I just need a little more practice and some patience. I don’t seem to know
what cats are. I think I want to play, although they don’t like me when I get all excited. But as you can see, I'm handsome. You
can't just have one kiss. I'm hard to resist!!! Please contact my foster mommy at
robin3delano@yahoo.com. DRVA

![]() Dax |
Dax is about 2.5 years old. He came to us from a shelter in the Tidewater area. Dax is neutered, current on vaccines, and
is now heartworm-negative. He is a healthy, happy boy, a pretty typical shepherd for his age. He is responsive and submissive
to people but does some male posturing with other dogs when they first meet. However, Dax has gotten along well with a dozen
or more dogs in his foster home. Dax is friendly to people generally, but probably isn't a good choice for children under 10. I
don't think he will be cat-friendly or even cat-tolerant. He loves his crate and is generally good indoors, but needs to be watched
or crated when you are gone. He can jump a 4' fence easily and will do so when he's ready to come back inside. He can also scale
a 6' chain link fence. Dax will make a wonderful active companion. You can contact his foster home at
vadogrescue@aol.com if you have any questions. JBVA

![]() Destiny #3 |
Destiny was picked up as a stray, so nothing is known about her past although she has an old spay scar and knows some
commands so she was once somebody's pet. She is still timid and shy, but once she is comfortable, she is very affectionate. She
came into VGSR with little to no hair, suffering from a range of skin, eye, ear infections and picked up the nickname "Peanut"
from her bald wrinkly look. She has responded very well to her treatments and is rapidly regrowing her coat. She is a mixed
breed with some sight hound given her ears, tail and posture. She lives with 3 other shepherds, 2 cats and a teenager, and is
doing very well in that environment. She is house- and crate-trained, and will make a wonderful pet for many faithful years
to come. AAVA

![]() Duncan #2 |
Hi, my name is Duncan. I am a Shepherd mix but look very much like a pure-bred shepherd. I have black and tan coloring
and think I am quite good looking. I am a six-year-old, neutered male. My birthdate is 04/08/2002. I am great with children
and get along well with other dogs. What you should really know about me is that I love to play with anyone; two legged or four,
who will play with me. Don’t tell anyone, but despite my 77 pound frame, I am scared of cats. I have quite a bit of energy and
am very vocal about expressing my feelings. When Nancy adopted me in 2002, I had a bout with mange, but that was treated
and I have not had a recurrence since. I am house-trained, crate-trained and leash-trained, and used to a fenced in yard. I
have become bosom buddies with my pal Georgia, so I know my human friends are going to do everything possible to keep
Georgia and me together.

![]() Ellie #3 |
Ellie originally came from a shelter in Bedford, VA; after she was given up by her previous owners who were moving.
She is a spayed, 1.5-year-old, female GSD, and has lop ears. Ellie was diagnosed with Lyme disease for which she is
currently taking antibiotics. She's a very gorgeous girl and is curious about our cat but has not chased him or shown any
aggression; she just watches him intently and sometimes wants to play with him. A firm "No" stops any bad behavior from
Ellie. She is very eager to please her family and prefers to be in the same room with people. Ellie is afraid of other dogs but
she doesn't growl or bite. I am working on socializing her and getting her out and about to as many new situations as possible.
She is crate- and house-trained and, we are working on basic commands with her as well. Ellie seems to love kids and I think
she may have had children in her previous family, she gets very excited when she sees a child approach her but is very gentle
with children. She isn't a jumper but when she is let out of her crate, she does get extremely excited and tends to jump a little
at that time; we're working on breaking her of this habit. Ellie is about 70 lbs., and needs to gain about five more pounds. She
does pretty well on a leash and loves to take walks. She also really enjoys her kiddie pool! You can contact Ellie's foster mom at
lovegsds@gmail.com. JSVA

![]() Frieda #2 |
Freida is a drop-dead beautiful, pure-bred (with papers) GSD who gives the best kisses you could imagine. She has her BH
title (temperament test). She is very smart and instinctively untangles her leg out of a leash when walking. Right now she is
living with other GSDs, but she really needs to live in a single dog home. Freida wants to be reigning queen of the dog world and
is not afraid to try and prove it to other dogs. She is fine in public with other dogs, she just can't live peacefully with them! She
loves all people and has never met a stranger. She recently spent a couple of days with three young children and was fantastic
with them. Her hips and elbows were x-rayed and rated good. She is German bred, her mother was considered show lines and
her grandfather was VA1 Uran vom Wildsteiger Land. She is everything that a German Shepherd was meant to be. At age eight,
she runs like a deer and loves to play with toys. Today the vet said that she looked and acted more like she was four years old
instead of eight. SLVA

![]() Gazelle |
Hi there! I’m the graceful Miss Gazelle and I run like the wind with an occasional long graceful leap. I’m a high energy girl
and love to chase and tackle my soccer ball. I’m a perfect lady in the house and don’t bother anything that’s not mine.
(Although I have to confess that one time foster mom was quite upset when she caught me licking the butter out of a pan she
set on the stove. I won’t do that again!) I have a high prey drive and once brought foster mom a live bird. I don’t know why
she didn’t look very happy about it because I was just trying to say thank you for getting me out of the shelter and giving me a
second chance. Maybe I should just catch bugs instead. I definitely shouldn’t live with cats or other small animals. I love to
play with my foster brother and he doesn’t mind that I’m a pretty rough player. Foster mom thinks I would be happiest in a
home with another dog to play with and keep me busy. I’m not quite all German Shepherd, but I think that just makes me
extra special. I would make a great agility dog, or with a little work a search and rescue dog. I’m cute and friendly and if you
treat me well I won’t just follow you from room to room, I’ll follow you from one side of the room to the other. KBJVA

![]() Georgia #2 |
Hello, this is Georgia. Actually, I respond much better to my nickname, “Pretty”. I am the matriarch of our pack at 9 years
old. I was born on 12/08/98. I am spayed and I am a pure-bred German Shepherd. I think you will find my red and black
coloring quite attractive. I am the smallest of the bunch but every part of my 62 pound body is full of love and affection. I am
great with children. I too have a secret. Something happened in my past (before Nancy) and I get along fabulously with other
male dogs but not with other female dogs. As sweet as I am, when I encounter another female dog, I don’t do well. The other
thing you should know about me is that I love to chase things. I am not sure how I would do in a home with cats as I have never
been exposed to them. I am in very good health and so much want to be house-mates with my forever buddy, Duncan. I am
house-trained, crate-trained, leash-trained, and used to a fenced in yard.

Gretchen #3 Photos coming soon... |
Gretchen was born in December 2002 and purchased by her previous owner from a breeder in April 2003. Due to moving
to a smaller home, her family dropped her at the shelter. I have all of Gretchen's previous medical records. According to the staff
where she was a patient before, her owner kept her in the garage most of the time. Thus, at six years old, Gretchen is not
house-trained, but we're working on it! She is a sweet girl who wants to please. She responds to gentle corrections. Gretchen is
still a very active girl and will need a home with an active family to keep her busy. She is exhibiting a couple of obsessive
behaviors, such as pacing and continually chasing her tail. I've only had her four days and already she is exhibiting these
behaviors less and less often. With regular exercise and toys to keep her occupied I think she can learn not to obsess. She does
not get along well with one of her foster sisters but is fine with the other. If she's going to be adopted into a home with another
dog, a face to face meeting will need to occur first. Currently Gretchen is very underweight. Once she's at her ideal weight she
should weigh about 75 pounds. She is a bit of a fussy eater. This girl needs a family who can provide her with the time and
attention she deserves. KKVA

![]() Hans #2 |
My history has baffled everyone. I was rescued from a shelter when I was 4 months old, scared to death of everything. I've
been in rescue for a long time, with a couple of visits to other homes but end up coming back to my foster home. Here is the thing,
I'm a very, very nervous boy that does well with women, but no children. Men tend to frighten me, too. I've been looking for that
special place to call my own, foster mom says that the right place is out there and will take time. My foster mom requests that
anyone that might be interested in meeting me be at an adoption event event followed by several other meetings afterwards to
gain my trust before she will let me to placed in another home. TDVA

![]() Heidi #5 |
Heidi is about as sweet a GSD as you will ever meet. When she was rescued, she had a serious case of bladder stones as well
as bladder and ear infections. Despite her discomfort, she never had a grumpy word for anyone. Thanks to VGSR, she's healed
from the surgery to remove the stones and her infections are gone. We're working on a plan to make sure she never has another
one of those sturvite stones again. Heidi is an A+++ companion dog. She loves people - men, women, children, and she gets along
well with other dogs. She seems to have a low prey drive. Heidi is house-trained, only chews on her dog toys, and is
crate-tolerant. She loves to snuggle and wants a forever home where she is part of the action. Other than an occassional raid on
the trash can, Heidi has earned the privilege of having free roam of her foster home. She walks well on a leash, likes car rides,
and knows a few commands. Her favorite trick is to "speak" and she loves to catch kibbles in mid-air. Heidi is looking for a
forever home that will make a commitment to give her daily exercise to help her achieve and then maintain a healthy weight.

![]() Hercules |
Hercules is a one-year-old male German Shepherd. He's got a short, stout build. You can see from the pictures that
Hercules has had a summer haircut, but he appears to be a fairly long haired dog. He's neutered, current on vaccines, and
house-trained. He hasn't had much other training, however, and it shows. He's a bit wild, rambunctious, a bit like a teenager
without discipline, but he's not really aggressive. In his former home, he had demonstrated a tendency to develop a
protective/possessive attitude towards his person and his space. That behavior needs to be nipped in the bud because this dog
has the potential to be a wonderful companion. Hercules is very devoted, and is willing and eager to learn. He needs an
experienced handler, however, not a busy household full of children, cats, rabbits, or other small creatures. You can contact the
foster home at
vadogrescue@aol.com if you have any questions. JBVA

![]() Indigo |
Indigo's story is that she appeared on a nice man's porch, out of the blue, and took up residence. He fed her and she
decided to stay. Then she started to get protective of his porch and would bark when people walked by. Indigo DOES like
to bark. She will bark her pretty head off at you, and you can walk right up to her and pet her while she is barking! But the
good thing is that she will stop when you tell her to. She loves lounging in her crate and runs to hide in it when something
scares her. Indy loves to go for walks and is a major sniffing machine. The only thing she likes better than walks is begging
food from you when you are in the kitchen, cooking. She likes to play with Big Max (my other foster) and is a huge flirt with
him. We think someone was mean to her, so we are looking for an especially kind and patient new family for her. SLVA

![]() Jade #2 |
'She's got legs and she knows how to use them'.......anyone know why my foster mom keeps singing that to me? I mean I
am very tall for my age, and I'm all legs, but really she doesn't sing good. I'm new to VGSR, but already in LOVE with my
foster mom and her teenage kid. I live with 2 4-legged sisters and we get along just fine, I really am not sure how to play with
them yet, but they are tolerating me and trying to show me the ropes. I am trying to learn not to jump up on people, or
counter-cruise but hey, I think I've already gotten better at that in just 2 days. Anyway, if you want to meet me, just come out
to some of the adoption days VGSR is having on the weekends, I'll be there with my long legs and kisses to greet you. GSVA

![]() Jake #11 |
Hi! My name is Jake. I came to Shepherd Rescue when my Mom died and there was no one to care for me. I am a medium
size, red sable German Shepherd mixed with a little bit of something else perhaps one of the Belgian Shepherds. I am a gentle,
happy, loving guy. Although I am 8 years old, I love to run and play with the younger dogs in my foster family. I love to play
with the 9-month-old puppy. I am a bit overweight so my foster Mom has me on a diet. I walk nicely on a lead and know how to
sit and down. I attended an obedience class as a substitute and did very well with all the exercises. I did well with the dogs
there and said hi to some children that were watching. I also attended a doggy playday and had a good time with all the dogs
there. I have lived with cats and behave very well with the cat here. KJVA

![]() Jane |
Jane is a beautiful, black-tipped sable, energetic adult female GSD, probably of European working lines. She is about 3.5
years old and a big girl at 92 pounds and carries it well. Her owner has terminal cancer and has asked VGSR to help find a new
home for Jane. During the last 3 years she has lived in a row house in DC. That environment did not provide for much
socialization or training. However, Jane is extremely well-behaved, with the right person. She is very intelligent and has taken
well to training. She is a dominant female but has come a long way in responding to commands and getting along with other
dogs. She now knows and obeys "Down," "Sit," "Stand," "Stay," "Wait," "Leave it," "Come," and "Let's Go." She is
crate-trained, house-trained, and is well behaved in the house. She is a super companion and somewhat protective. She will
follow her person all around the house. She will give you a good snuggle and a strong lean but is not a couch dog or kisser. She
will greet you with lots of enthusiasm and wagging tail and will stick by your side. She likes cats, but not in a good way. Although
much improved on her socialization, Jane still bears watching with people and dogs until her reaction is judged. She has shown
some reaction to a few people, some of which could have been considered to present an adversarial posture when approaching
or near her. She and another female foster had some issues that they worked out but she has been fine with our 2 male dogs.
She is protective, but not aggressive over her food and toys with other dogs, but not with her person. Jane loves to chase toys
and likes to tug. She also loves to go for long hikes in the woods, and she sticks very close even when off leash. Jane has a minor
skin condition that is controlled by a daily vitamin E plus fish oil capsule. Other than that she is a robustly healthy dog. She
enjoys grooming and rough play when petting and scratching. She is agile, athletic, and has a great gait. She is good on leash
and really knows what a leash is for, just so you don't forget, she will bring it to you. Jane needs a job and would be best suited
for a family with strong GSD experience. Her new home will need to devote the time to continuing her learning to help Jane
meet her true potential as a great GSD. Please contact
martin.shepherd@att.net or your case worker to learn more about her.

![]() Jang Sae |
I would like to introduce you to Jang Sae. He is a beautiful, six-year old boy, who was dumped at the shelter because his
family was moving away. To us, he seems a lot younger than six, but that is what his paperwork says. He was very nervous
after spending 20 days in the shelter, and he lost weight in that timeframe, but now he is responding quickly to being in a home
with a pack. He is quiet and alert and very intelligent. He was outside on our deck and wanted to be inside and he was trying to
open the door; he had the heavy glass door open several inches when we noticed. Jang Sae is okay on the leash, he pulls a little
as if he has somewhere to be, but responds well to direction. He knows some basic commands in English, but we were told he
knows commands in Korean. We are working toward figuring out some of those commands. Jang will be attending adoption
events in the Northern Virginia region and if you would like to meet him or if you have any questions, feel free to email us at

![]() Jesse #2 |
Hi, everyone!!! My name’s Jesse. The reason I’m here is because I’m addicted to the internet! Thank heaven for that; now
you're here looking at me, and I couldn’t be more happy! You see, I’m looking for a permanent home. I love this home but my
foster mother is constantly nagging: eat your dinner; come here for your brushing, etc.! Look, I’m not a kid any more, but she’s
driving me crazy! I’m in the prime of my life and as such, I do the normal adult stuff: long “leash” walks in the neighborhood,
hanging out with my human, lying around at your feet, just being pals with ya. I’m not a kid anymore although I’m fine with
my husky brother, cocker spaniel sister and the other four brothers and sister cats I live with. I’m just like everyone else. I’m
well-mannered in the house and love hangin’ out. I’m respectful of humans, even foster mom……….she does walk me daily, so
she’s not all bad. Just because I spent so much time trapped in a back yard in my previous life doesn’t mean I’m not ready to
resume normal life hangin’ out with you humans, I really love your company! Just laying at your feet is pretty cool when I’m
not writing a book! And, I have the sweetest face and eyes, you’ll melt in my paws! Plus, I’ve had all my shots (I hate those
things!) from the rescue league, I love those people! Also, at 70 pounds, I have quite the figure! So, enough said, you're at the
computer so get to it: email my nagging foster mom at
robin3delano@yahoo.com and we’ll meet up. Maybe even hang out. You’ve got lunch right? DRVA

![]() Jesse #3 |
Jesse is a 5-year-old, female, long-haired GSD with a sad story behind her. She was bought as a puppy as a service dog for
a deaf child. Jesse was trained for 6-8 weeks by a professional trainer, then the owner completed the training, but it appears she
was most likely used more as a companion dog than as a deaf service dog. Jesse joined the family when the deaf child was 9. After
serving as a guardian and companion to their child for five years, the child grew up and no longer needed the dog and so Jesse's
family repaid her service by dumping her at a shelter. In terms of disposition, Jesse is very gentle and sweet with adults and
children, as befits a child service dog. She is house-trained, good on leash, and knows basic commands. Due to her probable use as
a companion dog rather than a deaf service dog, her retention of original training is uncertain. For use as a service dog, she will
need to be re-evaluated by a trainer who could determine the quality of the original training. As a companion dog we think she
will work out great. Jesse is used to being an only dog. She is learning to share her her personal space, toys, and humans with her
foster sister. The longer hair requires more grooming but she loves to be brushed and readily flops over on her back for belly
rubs. She will make a tremendous pet, especially for families with younger children.

![]() Kacey #2 |
Currently Not Available! My name is Kacey and I'm a new mother of 8 puppies. I am so happy that VGSR rescued me prior to having my puppies. I
know if it weren't for them, I would have had my puppies in the shelter. At first I was so scared of everything and everyone and
so, so shy. My personnaltiy blossomed after just a short time with my foster family. I'm learning new things every day, and I'm
so happy and a lot of fun. My puppies were born on August 4, 2008. I have a wonderful temperament and I get along well with
other dogs. I have lots of energy and I like to romp and play with kids and dogs. I'm taking very good care of my little puppies
because my foster family always praises me and tells me what a wonderful mother I am. I get along great with my brother dog,
Rebel and my sister dog, Joney, but right now they both know to stay away when I'm with my puppies. I'm very curious about
everything and I love to run after balls and sticks. I enjoy walks while my puppies are sleeping. I'm a very smart girl and I learn
quickly and I love to please. I know "come", "sit", and my foster family is doing a great job working on my potty training and I'm
learning to walk on a lead.

![]() Lady #15 |
Hi, my name is Lady. I am a medium-sized, black-and-tan, female GSD. I am quiet and gentle indoors. I do well in a crate,
but I prefer being close to a person. Outdoors I love to investigate everything and I have made friends with the other dogs in
my foster home. I am a bit dominant with other dogs, but I am fitting in well with a few corrections. When I first came, I did
not like the puppy that lives here, but now we are good friends. I am learning to live a house and behave very well. I know
how to sit and down. I love to roll over for belly rubs. I pull a little on a lead, but I am learning to do better. I am very
interested in the cat that lives here and want to chase it. When I came, I was in heat and was being treated for a small problem.
I will be spayed in March. I am happy in a quiet home, and am getting used to being out with other dogs and people. I get very
worried if there is a lot of noise or activity. My foster Mom is gradually taking me out to get me used to people and noises. I
would do best in a calm home. KJVA

![]() Lucky #6 |
Hi, everyone. My name is Lucky. I am a wonderful boy with lots of energy and lots of love to give to a special family. I am
about 18 months old, and I am a black sable long-haired GSD with just a hint of red here and there. My foster mom says I am
gorgeous. I guess I am ok. I don't think I look that great since have no hair on one of my rear legs. See "somehow" my leg was
broken (possibly with a baseball bat) and the really nice rescue people put me through surgery to fix it. It had been broken for
about 5 weeks before I could get it fixed. Before I went into surgery, my foster mom had to take me to a cardiologist. After
some testing, it seems that I have grade 3-4 heart murmur (out of 6). My doctor says that I do not need any medications right
now, but I may need some in the future. No special treatment for surgery and I went under twice and did great!! In about 3
weeks, I go back for x-rays to make sure that my leg is healing well. It will take me a while to get back into shape. Right now, I
am taking short walks and trying to gain some weight since I have more hair than weight on my body. I am about 90 lbs., and
am probably 20 lbs. underweight. I am now taking short walks and I am doing some exercises. Other than that, I have to stay
very calm and fairly still. I have severe muscle atrophy and it will take a while for me to get back up to par. Besides all that, I
love playing with other dogs and I love to snuggle with my humans. I have a kitty in my house, but she doesn't really like to
play so I just give her some space and she doesn't smack me. I like to give belly and get lots of love. I love playing ball too, but
my foster mom says that it will be a while before I will be playing fetch. I am young and still a little bit mouthy but am easily
corrected and very anxious to please. DGVA

![]() Lyka |
Lyka is a very cute, affectionate, female GSD. She is quite energetic and playful, with a lot of fun puppy love. Obedience
training would be advisable, but she is highly intelligent and eager to please. She does great off leash and responds immediately.
She gets along with other dogs, but not cats. She is said to love children but could knock down a small one. With a little bit of
training and one-on-one attention, Lyka will blossom into a very wonderful and devoted companion. JBVA

![]() Marisol |
Marisol is currently 4 months of age. She is a German Shepherd/Lab mix (mom full German Shepherd and dad Black
Labrador). She is ok with the vet. She is spayed, has all shots up-to-date, and when she turns 1 she gets the 3-year rabies shot.
Right now she has a 1 year rabies. She is crate- and house-trained. She loves to play. Loves to lie in the kiddie pool when she is
hot, and then dries herself in the sun, thus the name - Mar means ocean, and sol means sun. Likes to follow you around, likes
to watch TV, and just hang around and chew on her nylabone. She likes her dry food with water in it, or she will not eat it.
She knows the commands "sit" and "down". Loves belly rubs. She will let you know when she needs to go out by going to the
door and in the morning she barks to be let out. She is used to being in a fenced yard. I let her and my guys out to play on their
own and she enjoys it. When its too hot or cold I bring them all inside. It does take her a bit to warm up to poeple, but then she
is good. She is good with other dogs and kids. Not sure about cats, so far she is indifferent. She will let you put your hand in her
food, and in her mouth. She will let you cut her claws if you are comfortable doing so. She still drools in the car when we have
to go to the vet.

![]() Maximus #4 |
Maximus (who we call Big Max around here!) came to us to escape from neighborhood children who were extremely abusive
to him, so it is understandable that kids make him nervous. It seems that a foster child and some kids next door put a leash on
Max, who thought he was going for a walk, then they proceeded to chain him to a tree and beat the stuffing out of him with a
metal baseball bat. As a result of the beating, most of his tail had to be amputated and his lower canine is broken. He is
supposed to be all German lines, and he certainly looks like it. He is actually pretty good walking on a leash, but he can be
reactive to other dogs and some people. He is getting better and better as we do more leash work. Once he trusts you, he
leans against you and buries his head into your body for maximum contact. He takes treats very gently and is really good with
the other dogs unless they try to steal his blue squeaky raccoon that he likes to carry around. (The raccoon will convey upon
adoption!). I used him as a pillow during the Superbowl and he made an excellent cushion. We want to keep him safe, so he
will require an experienced owner. But, I can promise you this, he is the dog of a lifetime. He is extremely handsome, highly
intelligent, affectionate, protective and just an awesome, awesome fellow. SLVA

![]() Oliver |
Hi, I’m Oliver but my friends call me Ollie. I’m a great guy who was turned in to the shelter by my owner who no longer
wanted me. I think I’m a good boy and didn’t deserve that, but thanks to VGSR, I’m now looking forward to finding a forever
home. I love to run and play with all the other dogs at my foster home, and I even share my food sometimes. I’ll roll right over
so you can rub my belly because that’s one of my favorite things in the whole world. I love to chase tennis balls but I don’t bring
them back because I think my human should have fun chasing tennis balls, too. I’ll give you kisses and then just to show you
how much I love you, I’ll very gently nibble on your chin or nose too. I’m very vocal and if you ask me I’ll tell you all about my
day in great detail. I also like to ride in the car and I hope that one day soon I’ll go for a ride to my new home where I can
happily live forever. HDVA

Pocket is a darling, petite GSD mix. Despite her horrible past of being tied up to a tree and not getting proper care, she is
happy as can be and good with everyone. She has the most beautiful face and lively eyes. She has a great appetite, never barks,
is quiet at night and just lies around. Everything is exciting for Pocket who is still insecure someone will again dump her. She
starts licking your hand when she does not know what is expected of her. She loves lounging on the couch and at night puts her
head on your lap to nap while you watch tv. She gets up the minute you get up. Like a puppy, when you call her, she comes
dancing up to you. She is house-trained. Apart from 'sit', she clearly has had no previous obedience training. Pocket has
undergone heartworm treatment and is doing really well. She also was treated with antibiotics because she tested positive for
lyme disease. Her skin infection is gone and her coat is thick and shiny again. She loves squeaky toys, playing fetch with a
squeaky toy, attention from humans and loves playing with our 2-year old female GSD. She is really good with cats, she does
not even look at them. She is not crate-trained. She likes lounging on a couch or a dog bed instead. She is good in a small room
or free roam. Pocket also learned once upon a time how to climb a chain link fence. She only did it once here at our home when
another dog passed right next to our fence and she wanted to go with him and play. Overall, she prefers to stay where humans
are and when off leash, she bounces away for a few miles to then return to you. She will definitely become a loving family dog to
a family who is around a lot, is patient with her and loves to have a playful, wildly happy dog. If you think Pocket is a good match
with your family, please contact her foster mom Karen at

![]() Ramsey |
Ramsey is a owner-surrender because the owner was away to many hours a day. He is very athletic and use to 3-8 mile
walks a day in the mountains. Even with being kept indoors for such long days he is very well behaved inside, he is not a barker.
He is crate-trained. He loves to play fetch with any toy there is. He knows sit, down, come, shake, and speak, he also walks well
on leash. He does show a dominant side towards some male dogs (large) but will respond to correction. He has stayed with small
dogs and there wasn't an issue. He adores children, his former owner has 9 small grand children. He has been known to chase
cats but once he reached them he would give a smell, so not to sure about cats even though he has never harmed one. He will
be attending adoption events in Front Royal, Winchester and Gainsville if you would like to meet this handsome boy. THVA

![]() Reese |
Reese is a 20-month-old, 70 lb. female, Dutch-colored Shepherd that was turned in to the Ann Arundel, MD, shelter by her
previous owners who were no longer able to care for her. She is a typical 2-year-old GSD that if very playful and has lots of
energy but is also very well behaved. Reese responds well to commands and is one of the best GSD's you will find around people.
She knows sit, stay, come and always listens when you tell her what to do. She is great around people - really loves everyone -
and was raised with four young children in the home. She is social and wonderful around other dogs but is not good around cats
and should go to a cat-free home. She is fair on a leash and getting better ever day with her leash manners. She is house-trained
and tolerates but doesn't love her crate. She was recently spayed and is up to date on all her shots. If you are looking for a sweet
and people-friendly female GSD, Reese may be the girl for you. She will be attending Northern VA adoption days in the coming
weeks. If you want to know more about Reese or arrange to meet her, you can email her foster dad at

![]() Sabrina #4 |
Sabrina came to VGSR from Amherst, Virginia on Wednesday, July 16th. She was a stray so we don't know much about
her history. We do know that she is smart, house-trained, and good in her crate once she is in it. She is gradually improving
with her crate training. Sabrina is an incredibly sweet and affectionate dog, but in need of some manners. She is a bit dominant
with other dogs, but she is fitting in with a few corrections. She is on antibiotics because she tested positive for Lyme disease.
More updates as we learn more about her. She will be attending Northern Virginia adoption days. You can contact the foster
home at

![]() Sam #8 |
Hi. I am Sam, I am. And I am one gorgeous animal. I am black and tan, and have big paws like a lion. My foster mom says
that I have a huge head. Well I do weigh about 100 pounds after all. When I walk down the street, people say "wow, he is
handsome". But I'm not conceited. I'm a really nice boy. At 9 years old, I'm pretty laid back. My favorite thing is to just be with
my family. I also get along well with other dogs. I have 2 foster brothers and a bossy foster sister. She is only 60 pounds but she
tells me where to go and what to do. I like her so I just do what she tells me. I don't need a whole bunch of exercise, just a few
nice walks a day will do me. My foster mom says that I am a gentle giant. Anyway, enough about me. I'd like to hear from you
if you are looking for the perfect companion to hang out with. My foster mom and I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks,
Sam. MDVA

![]() Samantha #3 |
Samantha had her surgery and is making her recovery. Thanks to all the donations, she has started her rehab and is doing
very well with it. She uses an underwater treadmill and we do a lot of exercises at home to strengthen her muscles and train her
new elbows. We would like to find someone who can continue it with her as that would be a rewarding experience for both Sam
and her new family. Now that she has started her therapy she is coming around and starting to build both stamina and energy
and is back to playing with her friends. Sam currently takes glucosamine chondroitin, omega 3, and ester C to help her elbows
and will need to continue with those. Sam is a very submissive girl and will make any family proud. She isn't demanding at all
and tries very hard to please everybody she meets. Sam and her two and four-legged friends greatly appreciate all the donations
and good thoughts she has received and continue to welcome more. You can contact Samantha's foster home at
muraenidae@verizon.net if you have any questions or want an update on her. LMVA

![]() Shey |
Anyone for WWF and Nascar? Shey is a happy, curious, personable, and smart 2-year-old male GSD. He is polite and
well-mannered inside, but is a dynamo outside. He needs plenty of exercise and is a good jogging buddy. He does have
separation anxiety and must be crated when you are not home. However, he likes his crate and will go in upon command. Shey
has shown only a fleeting interest in children and doesn’t appear to bond with them. Shey would really like a canine wrestle
buddy and one he can race around a fenced yard with and investigate everything. Shey has learned basic obedience commands
such as sit, down, stay, off, leave it, settle down, and come. At night he sleeps by my bed on a soft pillow that he appreciates. He
is being fostered in the Shenandoah Valley. Contact

![]() Star #4 |
Star was dropped at the shelter by her previous owner. She is a sweet girl and is in good health for a senior gal. She is a bit
stiff in the hips and cannot be adopted to a home where she is going to have to maneuver a full flight of stairs several times a day.
Despite what we were originally told, Star is not good with all other dogs. She will probably do best in a home where she can
receive all the love and attention. Star's exercise needs are minimal. A couple of 20 minute walks a day and she's a happy girl.
She is wonderful in the house and does not require crating when left alone. She rides well in the car and walks well on the leash.
Star is a big girl, probably weighing in at about 85 pounds. Please feel free to contact her foster mom at
roundhillmassage@yahoo.com. KKVA

![]() Sunny |
Meet Sunny! She is a beautiful 2-3-year-old, black-and-red female GSD. She currently weighs in at about 65 lbs., but could
stand to gain 5-10 lbs. Despite being a stray, her coat is gorgeous and soft. She seems to get along fine with the two resident
dogs (1 male GSD and 1 male mini-dachshund), but does like to chase squirrels so may not be good with cats. She tends to be a
little timid at first but warms up fairly quickly, loves to be petted and gives lots of little kisses. She also walks well on a leash.
She will make a wonderful (and beautiful!) addition to one lucky family! BMVA

![]() Trooper #2 |
Trooper is a 2-year-old, handsome GSD. His owners have decided to let him go to a home that can give him the exercise
and care he so desperately needs. Obedience training is also recommended once Trooper finds his forever home. Once settled
down, he does seem to get along with other dogs, but his behavior is unknown with cats. He is not food motivated, but does
love to play ball. Trooper is very alert and interested in everything around him when walking on leash. He does tend to pull
quite a bit and will need someone willing to work with him on this. Trooper presently lives in a home with a young girl and does
fine. However; it is not recommended that he go to a home with young children. Trooper is crate-trained, and according to his
owners, is very protective of his crate. Like most GSDs, he is somewhat protective of his home and family. For this reason,
Trooper should only be placed in a home with someone who has experience with GSDs. If you have any questions, or would like
to meet Trooper, please contact

Currently Not Available! My name is Tucker. My owner had to give me up because she developed severe allergies. I am completely house-trained
and crated-trained. I like other dogs, although I will bark at them when we first meet. I am an active boy, so a home that will
give me a job would be best. I come with my AKC papers and both of my parents have their OFA certificates. I am only 7
months old, so I still need to learn things like not to mouth people. Although I like everyone, I would do best in a home with
older children. PFMWV

![]() Victor #2 |
Victor is a 3-year-old, long-haired German Shepherd. He's very playful still, particularly with other dogs, although he can
try to be a bit dominant with other males. He's a rough and tumble player and would love to have another dog about his age to
play with, or better yet, a very active owner. Victor is neutered, vaccinated, and has been treated for heartworms. He's very
healthy and lively, although he also displays some behavior that makes me think that he's been fairly well cared for and kept as
a family pet. He's very attentive and looks for direction, but he hasn't had much, if any, training. He's not a good choice for
someone with young children or cats. Victor is still in the prime of his life and with a little work will make a wonderful
companion. You can contact Victor's foster home at

Zoe #4 |
This little girl originally came from a shelter in Christiansburg, VA. She has a beautifully-marked chest and face with
piercing gold eyes. Zoe absolutely enjoys being part of my dog pack and loves to play, play, play with her foster brothers and
sister. She is quite interested in my cats and sometimes chases them, but not always. She's been smacked on the nose a few
times by the cats and is learning to respect her new kitty friends. Zoe is an especially shy and timid girl. She is afraid of almost
everything except for other dogs. She is quite timid around people, but does not growl or bite. I am working on socializing her
and exposing her to as many new situations and people as possible. She is coming along well. She's definitely in the puppy stage -
into everything. Anything left lying around is fair game for puppy teeth. Zoe would do best in a home with another dog and/or
kids. She needs a forever family that has the time, energy and especially patience to train her and to help her come out of her
shell. She is definitely a fun dog once she gets to know you. I've had Zoe for almost a month now and have been better able to
assess her personality and needs. In order to make her transition to her forever family less stressful and permanent, this is
what I require for her: I will only place her in a home with l or more dogs. The home needs to have a fenced yard (no invisible
fence, please). Children in the family need to be older (around 9 years old and up). SSuVA.
